Fix a Bad Spray Tan — The Bronze Lily, St. Petersburg, FL

Spray Tan Repair · St. Petersburg, FL

A bad spray tan is not a week-long sentence. We’ll take it from here.

Streaky, patchy, orange, too dark — from a booth, an at-home bottle or another studio.

Most of a bad tan sits in the dead surface layer of skin, which means most of it can be taken off. Body Buffing Prep ($15) is a professional exfoliation pass with a percussion device and fresh pads, done in the studio right before we spray — it lifts an old, patchy or badly-applied tan and leaves an even canvas. Then a hand-airbrushed, colour-matched organic tan goes on properly. Open seven days, 7 AM to 11 PM; same-day is realistic.

The short answer

Fixing a bad tan, in plain terms.

A spray tan is colour sitting in the outermost layer of skin, so a bad one — streaks, drip lines, orange palms, a shade too dark — comes off the way skin does: by exfoliating. Doing that at home takes days of scrubbing and usually leaves a patchier tan than you started with. At The Bronze Lily, Body Buffing Prep ($15) does it in the studio in one pass, with a professional percussion exfoliation device and fresh buffing pads, immediately before a fresh application. Then we spray the way we always do: by hand, colour-matched to your undertone, with fourteen years of spray tanning behind the gun. Add the buffing to any formula — Signature $45, Standard Rapid $57, Sweat-Resistant Rapid $63 — and you walk out with the tan you meant to get.

Text a photo of the tan to (727) 218-7045 before you book; it tells us how much buffing to allow for. If you only want it off and nothing new on, say so — we will tell you honestly what the buffing alone can do. Full menu on the spray tan page.

How we fix it

Remove, even out, re-spray — step by step.

Look first. Your artist reads what went wrong: streaks from uneven solution, dark knees and elbows from dry skin, orange from a formula wrong for your undertone, a drip lines from a rushed rinse. The fix is different for each, and knowing which saves you a second visit.

Buff. Body Buffing Prep works the old colour out of the surface layer evenly — no raw patches, no scrubbing yourself pink at home. A heavy, fresh tan may not come off entirely in one pass; we will tell you what is realistic before we start.

Re-spray, matched to you. Hand airbrushing lets your artist go lighter where the old tan is still showing and build where it is gone, so the result is one even colour, not a tan on top of a tan. Undertone-matched solution is how you avoid orange the second time.

Rinse right. Rapid formulas rinse in 1–4 hours, Signature in 8–12. We will walk you through the window so the tan you leave with is the one you keep.

Being honest about it

Whether it is right for you.

If the tan is a day old and very dark, buffing lightens and evens it but may not erase it in one visit. Sometimes the honest advice is a buff today, a lighter re-spray tomorrow. We will say so rather than over-promise.

If it was a booth or a bottle, this is the most common repair we do. Booth tans miss the places a person would not; bottle tans streak where you could not reach. Both buff off well.

If it is a SEVERE sunburn, not a tan, we will not spray over it — severely burnt skin peels and takes the colour with it, unevenly. Wait until the peeling is done, then come in.

Then do not let it happen again. Exfoliate and shave the day before, not the day of. Shower the morning of the appointment and skip lotion, oil, perfume and deodorant. Arrive in loose, dark clothing — nothing white, nothing tight. Make the tan your last stop of the day, and stay dry until the first rinse. Most bad tans can also be a prep problem, not a skin problem.

Cancellations. Twenty-four hours’ notice is required. Cancellations under 24 hours are 50% of service cost; no-shows, arrivals 15+ minutes late, or cancellations under 4 hours are 100%. All bookings require a card on file — no deposits. Phone call or text to (727) 218-7045 are the only valid ways to cancel or reschedule. All sales are final.

Spray Tan Repair · Common Questions

Fixing a tan FAQ.

Can you fix a bad spray tan in St. Petersburg?

Yes. The Bronze Lily, 2851 1st Avenue N in Historic Kenwood, lifts an old, streaky or badly-applied tan with Body Buffing Prep ($15) — a professional exfoliation pass in the studio — then re-sprays by hand, colour-matched to your undertone. Open seven days, 7 AM to 11 PM; same-day is realistic. Text a photo to (727) 218-7045.

How much does it cost to fix a spray tan?

Body Buffing Prep is a $15 add-on to any spray tan: Signature $45, Standard Rapid $57, Sweat-Resistant Rapid $63. So a full repair — buff plus a fresh tan — starts at $60. No deposit; a card on file holds the appointment.

Can you remove a spray tan completely?

Usually most of it, in one pass, because the colour sits in the dead surface layer of skin. A very fresh, very dark tan may lighten and even out rather than vanish in a single visit; we will tell you what is realistic before we start.

My spray tan is orange. Can you fix the colour?

Yes. Orange usually means a solution wrong for your undertone or applied too heavily. We buff the old colour down and re-spray with a hand-matched solution, going lighter where the old tan still shows so the result is one even shade.

Will the buffing hurt or leave my skin raw?

No. It is a professional percussion exfoliation device with fresh pads — firm, even and quick, nothing like scrubbing yourself at home. It also leaves the smoothest possible canvas for the new tan.

Can I come in the same day?

Usually, yes. Text a photo of the tan to (727) 218-7045 so we allow the right time, and we will tell you what is open. The studio is open until 11 PM every night by appointment.

What if my tan came from a booth or another salon?

That is the most common repair we do. Booth tans miss what a person would catch; another artist’s uneven application buffs off the same way. There is no judgement and no surcharge.

How do I avoid a bad spray tan next time?

Exfoliate and shave the day before, not the day of. Shower the morning of, skip lotion, oil, perfume and deodorant, wear loose dark clothes, make the tan your last stop of the day, and stay dry until the first rinse (1–4 hours Rapid, 8–12 Signature). AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, choose the right spray tan salon and artist!
